The decedent's skeletal remains were found scattered in the woods near a makeshift camp near mile post 9.4 on Sultan Road. The camp, not visible from the road, was about 10 miles north of U.S. 2. Transients are known to frequent the area.

Although his cause of death is undetermined, a perimortem blunt-force injury was discovered on the man's head, which may have occurred from accidental or intentional causes.

Dental records did not match any in the system, and when mitochondrial and nuclear DNA profiles were developed, they also did not lead to any matches.

Recent efforts in genetic genealogy research, which required the development of a more advanced DNA profile, have revealed familial ties to Texas and Louisiana on one side, and to Amish and Mennonite communities in Ohio and Indiana.
