Elizabeth Brecker was a beloved high school teacher. She taught culturally relevant classes at the Tuscon Magnet School. She was a mother of two daughters, and close with her family and friends. Elizabeth was involved in different dance groups and had an interest in spirituality, specifically Buddhism. She loved yoga and was outgoing.

Elizabeth’s psychiatrist advised her to check herself into a mental health facility.  On January 10, 2019, Elizabeth drove herself to the Sierra Tuscon mental health facility which specialized in various treatments including addiction, mood and anxiety, pain recovery, and trauma programs. Elizabeth was experiencing post-traumatic stress as a result of a previous sexual assault. Elizabeth had planned on participating in a thirty-day trauma treatment stay.  

Elizabeth was not feeling like herself and had contacted her family prior to her self-admission to the facility. However, her family did know the exact date she was admitted. In the past, she was known to reach out to her family and professionals when she needed help. Her family was hopeful that this was a positive step and that she would be able to continue her life. 

Elizabeth checked herself in on January 10, 2019. As part of the intake procedure, she was observed by staff where it was determined that she was not a threat to herself or others. By January 13, 2019, she was moved to the general admission area of the facility, which was not under any lockdown. The last time Elizabeth was seen was around 3 PM on the corner of East Edwin Road and North Lago Del Oro Parkway of East Edwin Road and North Lago Del Oro Parkway. Later that afternoon, the staff discovered that Elizabeth was missing. 

Elizabeth Breck is described as a 46-year-old white woman with green eyes, blonde hair, and her ears are pierced. She is 5’4” and 115 pounds. She was last seen wearing gray top and gray skirt.

Upon reporting her missing, a search was underway. It was believed that Elizabeth only had cash and her ID on her person when she vanished. Her medical tracking bracelet and other belongings were found inside her assigned room.

The Sierra Tuscon facility is the flagship location of Arcadia Healthcare Company. The company has never publicly acknowledged Elizabeth’s disappearance. The Breck family has been outspoken about the lack of help from Arcadia during the investigation. In February 2019, her brother, Chris filed a report against two different agencies, Sierra Tucson with the Arizona Department of Health Services and The Joint Commission, a national not-for-profit accreditation agency. The family claims that Sierra Tuscon did not cooperate with the private investigator hired by the family. There was no electronic surveillance to monitor patient safety and Elizabeth was not allowed to contact her family who lived outside of the U.S.
