Hannah moved in with Mona at the Lake Lanier Club Apartments, now called MAA Lake Lanier, which was a gated complex; they lived on the second floor. The apartments are right next to Lake Lanier. There is a wooded area that separates the lake and the apartments. Mona, Hannah's mom, worked late; often not arriving home until 8 pm or later.

On the evening of the 18th, she tweeted, “If you put it down right, like the way I want it, baby we could fall in love <3”. A few hours later, at around 9:30pm, she tweeted, “So scared right now”. Less than 15 minutes later, she tweeted, “Every time we talk, I feel sick.” The next day, she tweeted, “I’d love to love you baby” and “Yeah, you made a big mistake”.

On August 20, Jeff gave Hannah $300 to spend on back to school clothes. He let her go shopping by herself at an outlet mall - she loved doing that. After Hannah was done shopping, she and Jeff went to dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Jeff dropped Hannah off at her mom’s at around 7:00pm. He never saw his daughter again.

The Division of Family and Children Services had an open case at the time involving Truelove and her family. Hannah had been in trouble for truancy, and DFCS had investigated her claims of altercations with her mother related to Harris' drinking, an issue the agency had identified as a risk in the home due to repeated incidents of drunk driving. The case manager could not find Hannah, however.

A few days later, on the 21st, she tweeted, “Did I ask too much, more than a lot? You gave me nothing, now it’s all I’ve got.” and “I miss you boy. & tbh, you’re all that I want.”

"I need to move out of these dang apartments." A few minutes later, she tweeted about a U2 song that she likes. A few minutes after that, she tweeted, “I’m getting fat - I have a little tummy now! Ugh!”

The case worker said that she appeared to be fine.

At around 4:00pm, Hannah was seen walking toward the picnic tables at the apartments - she often hung out there. Hannah was there because she didn’t want to see her mom when she got home, which was usually by 8:00pm. They were arguing over Mona not letting Hannah have a cellphone.  Hannah was last seen in the picnic table area as late as 7:30pm. She was seen with other teens from the complex. She was also seen talking to someone in the parking lot. At some point that evening, Jeff stopped by to see if Hannah wanted to go get something to eat. But she wasn’t home.

At around 9:00pm, Mona called Jeff and asked if Hannah was with him - he said no.

At around 10:15pm, Mona called 911 and reported Hannah missing - she said her daughter never came home. When asked if Hannah had ever done something like that before, Mona said no. After getting off the phone with police, Mona then called Jeff back and let him know that she had called the police. Jeff told Nancy Grace that Mona thought Hannah had run away because she was upset with Mona. But Jeff said Hannah didn’t have any friends with cars, so she wasn’t riding around with them - she should be at the complex. Jeff called back every hour to see what was going on - Mona was convinced Hannah was with a friend. Jeff wasn’t so sure - he didn’t think it was like Hannah to just up and leave without saying anything. Officers searched for Hannah in the area around the apartment complex. They also woke up her friends that lived at the apartments and asked if they’d seen Hannah, but no one had seen her since 7:30pm

At around 7:30pm, a man (who was visiting family at the apartments) was walking around behind the Lake Lanier Club Apartments when he saw what he thought was a mannequin down at the bottom of a ravine. He walked closer and soon discovered that the mannequin was actually the body of Hannah Truelove - he recognized her from a missing persons report. Hannah had been stabbed multiple times Hannah’s body was found just over Gainesville’s jurisdiction line, so her murder case was assigned to Hall County. The area where Hannah was found is surrounded by trees and is secluded - you can barely make out a few apartment balconies through the trees. However, investigators believe that the apartment complex was “so densely populated” that someone likely saw or heard something. The ravine was typically dry with vegetation, however between Thursday night and Friday morning, there had been heavy rain, which created a “fast moving creek”. The lead investigator told the Times that Hannah was submerged in the running water. Unfortunately, this meant that a lot of potential evidence was washed away. There was no blood found at the scene.

The police department confirmed the identity of the deceased as Hannah Truelove and classified her death as a homicide.

On February 20, investigators announced a $1,000 reward. They said they were still looking for the silver car. They said they had some “persons of interest”, and some people who have not cooperated with the investigation.

In August 2013, Hall County and the GBI released a statement for the one year anniversary. They said they were renewing a request for public assistance. They were still looking for the silver car, stating, “It’s one of those loose ends out there that we’d like to tie up”. They mentioned the car may have been repaired since.
