On December 6, 2017, Hermann Samitsch departed Marathon, FL (Boot Key Harbor) on board a 1972, 39', Pearson sailboat (SV), said to be en route to Panama. The SV's engine was not operable and had minimal navigation electronics. It was reported Hermann intended to sail solo and visit his family who resided in Panama.
