Norris Brister was born in New Orleans into a huge family, as he was the 12th of 13 children.

He would also end up with a big family of his own. He was the father of eight children, four boys, and four girls, and had 17 grandchildren.

Norris was described as a hard-working man who always had a smile on his face. His co-workers said he was a good guy who liked cracking jokes and making work fun.

He enjoyed playing football, shooting pool, and playing with his grandchildren.

At the time of his death, Norris, 51, lived with his daughter, Kentrell, and her three children, on the same block where he was murdered.

Norris worked as a food runner at the Cornet Restaurant, on Bourbon Street, in the French Quarter. His shift at the restaurant would usually end shortly after 11 p.m., and he would usually stay after work to play pool with his co-workers. But this night was different; this night, he went straight home.

Shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016, Norris left the Cornet Restaurant and headed home for the last time.

Usually, he would get a ride from a friend, but he had been taking the bus for the last week, so on this night, he boarded the bus headed to New Orleans East.

Once the bus stopped at the corner of Morrison Road and New Castle Street, Norris would get off and walk the rest of the way home. Norris' daughter stated that the total trip would allow him to make it home way after midnight.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on July 31, 2016, authorities responded to shots fired in the 7700 block of Keats Street. Norris was shot, lying in the middle of the street, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Norris' daughter, Kentrell, was not home at the time of the murder but arrived home while the authorities were still processing the crime scene. She noticed her father's tennis shoes and backpack lying in the street and pointed this out to the officers at the scene. However, once she provided his name and age, they assured her the man shot was too young to be her father.

Yet, approximately 3 hours later, authorities confirmed that her father had been the man they found deceased in the street.
